Hit Me!

Thursday, July 3rd, 2008

I Remember hearing this for the first time on a Bang & Olufsen stereo that looked like the deck of the Starship Enterprise. Ian Dury & The Blockheads seem to be getting a resurgence of recognition in the UK but not many people have heard of them this side of the pond. During the whole punk/post-punk era they were on something else entirely. Dury’s brilliant, wry, comic lyrics and almost spoken delivery combined with an incredible bunch of musicians as tight but loose as the JBs in their heyday.

New Feature! - Song of the Week

Thursday, June 19th, 2008

Well I really needed to jump start posting on this thing so I came up with this…I was going to call this Single of the week, or Record of the Week, but what do either of those mean any more? Maybe I should have called it audio file of the week (hmm, audiofile - audiophile) but, well it’s songs I’m listening to. They don’t have to be new, they don’t have to be singles etc. blah blah get on with it Matt.

This week I’ve got a special introductory offer of not one but two songs. Both of these have helped me get through the monotony of data entry in the last few days. Big shout going out to Radcliffe and Maconie for their excellent radio show and discerning tastes. I heard both of these on their show.

Elbow Cover Art

First up is Elbow  with One Day Like This. Brooke described it as a bit of an anthem and I have to agree. It’s a builder. Love the strings. It’s also very nice to hear someone’s regional accent while singing without sounding corny. Makes  a  morning of phpmyadmin crap much more enjoyable

Fleet Foxes - Pieter Bruegel Album Cover

Next is Fleet Foxes with White Winter Hymnal from their eponymous debut album. Not going to say anything about this. Buy it. Go somewhere where nobody is going to disturb you for 2 minutes 27 seconds. Put your ear goggles on. Listen. Exactly. Thank you.

Stay tuned…
